Corner view "Motion"

Motion.....I think of Mickey Mouse and his first black and white movies!!
This was actually Mickey's debut cartoon--but it wasn't the first one the world saw because it was originally made as a silent, and Walt Disney couldn't get a distributor for it. Only when he and his team got the idea to create a sound cartoon (Steamboat Willie) did he get a distributor and get it booked. Steamboat Willie, which was a parody of a live action Buster Keaton film, was an instant hit--and Disney went back and put a soundtrack on Plane Crazy, which also became a hit.

The theme next week is "room", and comes from Cole again.

  5. The great thing about walking away from a degree in animation is that I know a lot of great facts like this about cartoons that nobody else is as impressed with as I am, lol! People seem to hate on Disney a lot these days, but you can't deny that the man was an inspiration.

  11. Good choice for motion. Mickey and his buddies are so full of life, of motion. Do you know the one where they have a trailer home that has all kinds of nifty moves to it (convertible walls, if I remember correctly)?

  12. As a native Floridian, one of my favorite bits of the original Walt Disney World back when the had letter-based tickets was a free non-ride just of Main street near the entrance. The Main Street Cinema, a quiet cool dark place that showed 'Steamboat Willie" and other classics on continuous reel. Of course, it's long since been replaced by some gawdawful taffy shop.

  13. My 80 yo aunt has the first original Mickey Mouse cartoons published in Italy: they came in little, thin and long strip-like pages, and the stories are so much more engaging than the later ones.
